This the most impressive sentence in mind in this session. In Hong Kong education system, students are forced to rote a lot of knowledge without any in-depth thinking. Therefore, constructivism learning hardly takes place in HK. Being a teacher, we are responsible to develop the constructivism learning.
In this aspect, the interactive visual representation works and it can really help the students to construct their knowledge on their own.

My proposed fianl assignment

I am a high form mathematics teacher. The most impressive one is "Iran Map" which I posted on my Blog previously and I will show them to my students later on. I always think that map and atlas are very boring and I never take a look at them more than 5 minutes. But when I tried the Iran Map, I really found it very interesting and kept surfing more information about the whole country Iran. It is incredible that a map is no longer boring at all and I can learn a lot about the country Iran in a very short time. How can learning be interesting and fruitful??
In the later part of this session, I also tried many sotware with the explaination of the leacturer. They are really inspiring and I should take a look at my teaching at a different angle from now on....

Interactive Iran map

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/middle_east/06/iran_maps/html/default.stm

My reflection on session 3

In this session, I learnt how to make a story-telling and a vedio which I never come up with them in my teaching. Now, with the help of ICT, a story-telling and vedio are very easy to be produced. In my school, we have many projectors and notebooks, this makes vedio and story-telling possible in my teaching. Through out the whole lesson, I kept thinking how I can integrate them in my mathematics teaching and how the students think and react to them which they never come across. Above all, how such interactive and vivid "stuff" can arouse their motivation and enhance their learning is my key concern as they will take the HKCEE examination in F.5. I think it is really the time to change our teaching style and habit.

reflectin on session 2

" Visuals can present data, information, reality, knowledge, ideas, emotions,… " is the most impressive sentence I learnt in this session. Actually, the traditional learning can't "cater" the need of students now. Reading book can no longer motivate or inspire students' thinking. With the help of ICT, vedio and story-telling software are not difficult to be produced and they can brainstorm the students effectively. Above all, students can find learning enjoyable, no long boring. This, in turn, makes the learning far more effective and fruitful, and students can equip themselves well to face the challenges in this "knowledge era".

The beginning of Mite 6323

--What have you learnt in the first lesson of this module?

I find some interactive visual software interesting and I wonder in the HK education system, how we can integrate those softwares in our teaching to arouse the learning motivation of students. Actually, students can learn a lot through the visual media and thus enhance thier motivation to learn. Sometimes, we can provide some interactive activities for the students to learn and build up their knowledge. Besides, teachers can no longer be the intructors and knowledge-feeder. Instead, teachers should be the facilitators.

--What do you hope to learn in this module?

To learn how interactive visual activities helps the learning of the students and how students can benefit from these kinds of activities. For teachers, we are no longer a knowledge transmitter. In the past, we only focus on teaching the knowledge in a systematic and clear way. But now, we are the learning facilitators. We, instead, should think how to make students learn on their own with the aid of the ICT in order to develop the life-learning skill. We should think how to motivate, guide and help the students to learn and to solve the problems.
In this age of the knowledge, everything can change rapidly and every change can be challenging. Students should “learn” how to learn on their own. This is more important and can meet the need of the modern society more.

2) With the introduction of the ICT, the setting of the classroom can change to meet the demand of students and teachers. Sometimes, we need the students to form a group to discuss, to collaborate and learn together. In Hong Kong, land is limited and therefore, the classrooms are very small in general. Now, I should think about the setting and seating plan of the students within this limitation of the classrooms’ size to meet the demand of the new pedagogical as we adopt the ICT more and more.

3) With the help of the ICT, I am thinking about the possibility of the students having the lessons home in Hong Kong. It is more flexible and students can save a lot of time. Actually, almost every student in Hong Kong gets access to the internet home. Technically, the problems are not very great. Besides, during the SARS period, the normal schooling is virtually impossible and such kind of “flexible lessons” help.

4) In the past, the education system focused on the knowledge learning. But now, with the help of the ICT, students can learn in an interactive and collaborative way.

5) ICT doesn’t assist or facilitate the teaching. It is getting more and more momentum to reform the whole education system and curriculum. Teachers not only know how to integrate the ICT into their teaching, but also prepare themselves to change the whole syllabus or curriculum to meet the need of the society. For example, a well-design internet activity or course is time efficient, breeds curiosity in students and allows collaboration between students. Besides, it can provide the immediate feedback or marking and serves a lot of purposes.

6) We should provide a flexible learning environment for students : well-trained teachers, ICT equipments, ICT knowledge and well-design curriculum and assignments. We can develop students the self-management skill, collaboration skill, communication skill and motivation to learn, in order to foster the life-long learning in students.

7) We can design the assignments, with the help of the ICT, employing any of these 4 elements : (1) communication (2) research (3) graphic organizers (4) presentation. As the society develops rapidly, I will think more on developing a life-long learning instead learning with a lot drilling and memorization. Moreover, teachers now should consider more on quitting assigning tasks that develop a “cut & paste” and “spoon-feed” learning style.

8) E-learning means electronic learning. Both teaching and learning can take place with the help of electronic devices, for example, Internet-learning and the on-line course. They are more and more important and they are the trend in the education system. In the future, they will play an important role in education.

9) The six dimensions to understand innovativeness. The six dimensions are goals, teacher role, student role, ICT used, manifestation of learning outcome and connectedness. It can give direction, status and guidelines for policy-making in education organizations.

10) Knowledge is constructed continuously and Rubrics can serve as a formative assessment. Teachers are under pressure to equip themselves with new IT skills.
2. Teachers need to use IT in their teaching work.
3. Teachers have heavier workload in trimming and adapting the curriculum for ICT integration.
4. Teachers reposition themselves as facilitator.
5. Students can easily get access to the knowledge and information with the help of the ICT.
6. Students can learn at their own pace and they can construct their knowledge with the help of the ICT. Therefore, constructivism learning is more suitable than the instructivism learning and students can get more satisfaction and be more creative through the new learning approach.
7. Learning should not base on the textbooks. Students should communicate with the world and collaborate with other classmates more. It helps develop the creativity and the communication skill.

RETHINK Does the teacher’s role need to change in Hong Kong? Put forth some strategies to overcome obstacles for learning.
1. Teachers have to be open-minded to accept new challenges from ICT and curriculum reform integration. Seminar related to the content of the reform has to be provided to teachers so they will be less concern.
2. EMB should provide adequate financial support to purchase new equipments and teaching aids.
3. Teacher's role changes from knowledge transmitter to facilitator, technologist, knowledge navigator, co-learner, mentor, collaborator, etc.
4. Keep on professional development
5. To be more initiative and innovative
6. Most teachers’ role does not change.
² Good teaching practice with IT must be shown to them.
² Collaborations between teachers should be encouraged.
² Sharing among teachers should be encouraged.
² Teachers together with the principal should decide the curriculum reform together so that they are more willing to implement the planning.

REFORM Imagine what it will be like in 2015. What will have changed? How might you have helped with this change?
1. In 2015, the classroom setting is changed. Primary school students sit in front of computers and learn interactively like we do in Rm 103 now.
2. Students are self-disciplined and acquire knowledge actively.
3. Students raise inspirational questions which teachers and classmates learn together.
4. Students will use most of their time studying at home.
5. Computer and Computer network will replace the role of classrooms and schools.
6. Students need not bring any books and their schoolbags.
7. Examinations would be taken place in computers instead of pencil and paper.

reflection on session 3

What have I known?

I knew how the ICT reform the teaching in the previous session and the paradigm shift has taken place.

What have I learnt?

We can provide a flexible learning environment : well-trained teachers, ICT equipments, ICT knowledge and well-design curriculum and assignments. We can develop students the self-management skill, collaboration skill, communication skill and motivation to learn, in order to foster the life-long learning in students.

Besides, this session is very inspiring in how ICT reforms the curriculum and assignments. In the past, teachers in Hong Kong always focus on the drilling and memorization. Actually, we can design the assignments, with the help of the ICT, employing any of these 4 elements : (1) communication (2) research (3) graphic organizers (4) presentation. As the society develops rapidly, I will think more on developing a life-long learning instead learning with a lot drilling and memorization. Moreover, teachers now should consider more on quitting assigning tasks that develop a “cut & paste” and “spoon-feed” learning style.

Moreover, I have learnt the three levels of the Achievement Target and Assessment method Most Commonly Used. I also think about my students whether they can show the enduring understanding (level 3) in group projects and presentations.

What do I want to know?

In Hong Kong, due to the limited resources and tight curriculum, how do the e-learning and internet-learning reform the curriculum. I think it is a rather challenging question to every teacher. Besides, I think the paradigm shift will take place sooner or later.

reflection on session 2

What have I known?

I have learnt the constructivism learning and Bloom’s taxonomy. ICT helps in the constructivism learning which can develop the collaboration between students, critical thinking and the sense of learning.

What have I learnt?

A well-design internet activity or course is time efficient, breeds curiosity in students and allows collaboration between students. Besides, it can provide the immediate feedback or marking and serves a lot of purposes. Actually, the ICT is getting the momentum to reform the education system and curriculum.

E-learning can enrich the constructivism learning to develop the students’ growth. Around the world, there are a lot of e-learning objects or websites for students. E-learning becomes more and more common sophisticated and useful. Through the demonstrated examples, I can learn how they drive students to discuss and collaborate with others, think and therefore, they can get the sense of learning instead of getting spoon fed with knowledge.

What do I want to know?

How the ICT drives the model and assessment drives the learning more??

reflection on session 1

What have I known?

In Hong Kong, the education system is still focus on the knowledge rotting and though there have had some ICT promotion, the impact and effect is not tremendous. Meanwhile, in the west, the implementation of the ICT is very wide-spread and it helps in the cognitive learning if the students.

What have I learnt?

One of important aim of the application of the ICT in education is to develop the cognitive skill of the students. Much of the research focuses on the role of ICT in the successful development of cognitive skills. Other research indicates how, in ICT rich environments, young people develop new forms of learning, including the types of self managed and cooperative learning necessary for successfully contributing to the information economy and for lifelong learning.
I think in Hong Kong education system, we completely neglect the area of the development of the cognitive skill, which is very important for the growth of the students. I kept thinking how teachers can enhance the development of the students in the area in Hong Kong. Actually, it is really a big challenge as the syllabus in Hong Kong is very tight and rather difficult. Besides, how can I integrate the ICT in my mathematics teaching in a secondary school? Is the ICT support sufficient in Hong Kong? I know that to integrate the ICT in the traditional teaching is very challenging!

What do I want to know?

How can we promote the implementation of the ICT in Hong Kong, it is really a big question?

The paradigm shift

What is the impact of ICT on student’s learning in Hong Kong?
In the past, students acquire knowledge from teachers and solve defined problems. Teachers give instructional tasks and monitor the progress of their students. Besides, no ICT is used in isolated classroom teaching and student learning. Students used to follow instructions and listen to teachers. Students are assessed with written exams and closed ended questions. The learning is confined to inside classroom. Time is limited to the duration of a lesson.

As ICT introduces in curriculum, students acquire the skill for lifelong learning. These skills include self-management skill, presentation skill, ICT skills, and critical thinking and communication skills. Students need to decide what to learn and how to learn by gathering and processing information. The learning source is multidisciplines which include: Internet, CDROM, Knowledge forum, simulation tools and etc. More learning tools are available for students to build their knowledge such as mindtool and datalogging tools. Advanced technology enables students to learn outside the boundary of classroom. With wireless network, students can have lessons in real life setting. The learning outcome is measured by project based assessment and school based assessment. The evaluation consists of peer evaluation as well as teacher’s comment.

Does the student’s role need to change in Hong Kong?
Yes. Students have to be more self-motivated and self-discipline.

If so what can you do to help with the might you help this paradigm shift?
Teachers should support and encourage team building & collaborative process such as project-based group assignments. It cater for learning diversity and is student-directed. The focus is aim at primary school students and is in the topic of computer hardware , application and even life sills, such as asking students to shop for computer equipment as one of the final tasks.

Format & Layout

The format is systematic, clear and thoughtful. They make full use of the hyperlink functions to extend or compromise the limitation of the Weblogs. They have put a flowchart (graphical representation) in the beginning as users’ or learners’ guideline which is very effective especially for primary students.

Educational value

Educational value is a must and assured. The content can cater of different level of students and arouse collaborative learning. Peer tutoring and peer evaluation are promoted at every authentic tasks. It promotes the paradigm shift from teachers to students as students are asked to follow the Weblog information (i.e. ebook) and instruction and complete the tasks by themselves. It realizes the concept of learning to learn.

Group Development Process

Every group starts to work for the Weblogs from the very beginning.

Also, teachers should mediate communications between students & experts so as to let students to build their own knowledge. It helps in organising and collecting information. Besides, we can write anything on it anytime and anywhere.

From the Video, smarter not harder, the ICT can helps in the teaching and the role of the taechers is changing as students can learn on their own.

What do I know?
The role of the teachers is changing. In the past, teacher is the knowledge transmitter and the students are only receivers. This was the instructivism learning. But now, teachers are only facilitators and catalysts and students can learn by themselves with the help of the ICT.
